Swedish Massage

(A proper name, not a reference to Sweden)

This is a traditional type of massage used primarily for relaxation. However it does also provide various benefits for the muscular, nervous, respiratory and circulatory systems.

Swedish massage incorporates a collection of techniques such as petrissage, effleurage, stroking , kneading and tapotement. Each of the strokes and manipulations of Swedish massage are each conceived as having a specific therapeutic benefit. The final strokes on each part of the body are always made towards the heart to assist the lymph system ( which contains cells responsible for defending the body against toxins) and veins (which return blood to the heart). Both rely on muscle action rather than heart pump pressure to operate and the massage strokes improve and enhance their function.

Friction is reduced by using oils, lotions, gels or waxes. If the client wishes, quiet, gentle “mood” music may be played to encourage relaxation.

Swedish massage can :-

  • relax and tone muscles
  • stretch the ligaments and tendons, keeping them supple
  • increase circulation without increasing heart load
  • shorten recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes.
  • stimulate nervous system while at the same time relaxing the nerves themselves
  • give the recipient a better awareness of their body and posture
  • reduce emotional and physical stress
  • improve skin tone and condition
