Reflexology

Reflexology for Senior Citizens

The power of gentle, positive touch, given with respect and care cannot be underestimated.  Caring touch can have profound, positive effects on the mental and emotional state of the elderly or infirm. Reflexology provides physical and mental stimulation from an “outside” person not involved in the day to day routine care. This can relieve boredom for those who are mentally alert and help disoriented people reconnect with the present time and place.

As an individual relaxes, daily frustrations can seem less overwhelming. A person who feels better after a reflexology treatment may be also more inclined to be physically active or to socialise with others.

Reflexology can calm the anxious or agitated person who feels frightened, depressed or out of control. The person feels less lonely, and is reassured that he or she is still important.

Reflexology can be given in almost any setting including home, hospital or care facility.  Treatments last about an hour with a full medical history taken on the first session and updates taken on subsequent visits. In some cases, the massage therapist may want to consult with an individual’s GP or other health care team member before proceeding.
Reflexology is a truly holistic non-invasive therapy, where the practitioner sees the patient as a whole.  It has many benefits:

  1. calms the nervous system and promotes deep relaxation
  2. leads to better functioning of the circulatory system
  3. improves blood and nerve supply to muscles
  4. promotes good muscle tone through nerve stimulation
  5. compensates for lack of exercise in cases of illness or old age
  6. encourages elimination of waste and toxins
  7. reduces inflammation of soft tissues
  8. boosts the immune system
  9. reduces stress related symptoms

The frequency of sessions are based on individual needs.  To maximise the effects of Reflexology it is recommended that a course of 4 to 6 treatments are carried out at weekly intervals in the first instance.  Thereafter maintenance treatments may be required every three to six months.  However, many people enjoy the relaxation promoted by Reflexology so much that they continue with regular weekly treatments.
